Canoe articles - Dordogne 2003 - Day 3: May 16th
                                      Friday 16th May

I overslept and didn’t get away until after 8.30 am on a warmer morning. Cliffs
would line the route all day today. In the morning there was a gradual build-up of thin
high cloud and it looked as if there would be rain later in the day. As I passed under a
motorway bridge, which hadn’t been there last time I had canoed the route, I was
surprised to see a pair of dogs swimming across the river with no sign of the owner.
Throughout this trip I saw many fish-eating birds with large numbers of Grey
Herons and Kingfishers and frequent sights of Dippers. Dippers in particular are
sensitive to the quality of the water, so I am always delighted to see them, especially
since I drink the water from the river (after boiling).
There was light rain in the afternoon. I camped about 5.30 near Rouffillac. I had
been able to get Radio 4 (LW) for the last couple of days. It was nice to be able to hear
English again.
