Canoe Guide - Middle Level
Canoe Tours in England: Middle Level, East Anglia
I have not canoed this route.
The Middle Level is a collection of dykes, drains and rivers between the River Nene and the Great Ouse
constructed to drain the Fens. The enormous shrinkage of peat has meant that, in many areas, the drains run along
embankments well above the level of the land. Circular routes are possible in the Middle level.
Start and Finish: Ashline Lock, Whittlesey. Whittlesey is just east of Peterborough
Distance: 49.6 miles (80 km)
Portages: There are a couple of locks/sluices to portage.
Dificulty: Easy
The route:
Start at Ashline Lock in Whittlesey continue along Whittlesey Dyke, crossing Bevill’s Leam. When you reach
the old course of the River Nene turn left and pass through March. When you reach Popham’s Eau follow it to the
east to Three Holes Bridge. Here you turn right and head SW up the Sixteen Foot Drain. Turn right through Forty
Foot River (Vermuyden’s Drain). Turn left at the old course of the River Nene to Lode’s Lock. Portage Lode’s Lock
and continue to Nightingale’s Corner where you turn right down continuing down the old course of the River Nene
