Canoe Guide - River Nene
Canoe Tours in England: River Nene
I have not canoed this route.
The River Nene runs from Northampton to the North Sea. The river has been canalised and creates a link
between the North Sea and the canals of the Midlands of England. The final 25 miles to the Wash are tidal and only
suitable for canoeists experienced in these conditions.
Start: I have started the route description from the start of the River Nene navigation at the centre of
Northampton but you may find it convenient to start at Billing, on the outskirts of Northampton, where there is
parking beside the Billing road bridge.
Finish: The river reaches the sea at the Wash. You will probably want to finish your tour at Peterborough,
Wisbech or Sutton Bridge before reaching the Wash.
Portages: There are 38 locks on the canal which will need to be portaged.
Distance: 88 miles (141 km)
Difficulty: Easy unless you continue into the tidal section of the river.
