Canoe Guide - Trysilelva/Klarälven
                       Canoe Tours in Norway/Sweden: Trysilelva/Klarälven

Klarälven is Swedens longest river. It flows for about 160 km in Norway where it is called the Trysilelva
before entering Sweden and flowing for 300km as the Klarälven.
The upper reaches of the river have rapids and  occasional portages, but between Sysslebäck and Edebäck
the river is suitable for canoeing and kayaking without any land transport.

Start: Sörvika, NW tip of lake Femunden

Alternative starts: Trysil on highway 26 in Norway
Långflon at the Norway/ Sweden border
                       Sysslebäck         or Brannäs

Finish: Karlstad

Alternative Finish: Edebäck

Transport: There is a bus service from Trysil (Innbygda) in Norway to the Swedish border and then south
down the Klarälven to Karlstad.

Portages: 10 portages round power stations and possible portages round rapids.

Distance: 478 km
                     Sysslebäck - Edebäck: 109 km
                     Sysslebäck - Karlstad: 228 km

Difficulty: Femunden: Easy
                      Femunden - Sysslebäck: Difficult
                      Sysslebäck - Edebäck: Easy
                      Edebäck - Karlstad: Medium

     The route:
I have not canoed the first 164 km of this route.
0-67 km: No portages
The first 67 km is down lake Femunden.
67-164 km: Rapids to portage.

WARNING: There are rapids in this section well outside the grade for this book. An expert whitewater
canoeist might shoot these rapids but most tourers will need to portage or possibly rope the canoe down the
rapid. I have little information on possible portage routes, which may be difficult since the river passes through
wilderness, but there is a road following the course of the river.
Femunden- Isteren (Gløta), 2,5 km. Rapids up to grade III+ . Portage along the road.
Galtsjøen- Femundsundet, Fairly easy with long calm sections.
Femundsundet - Elvbrua. Several rapids up to grade III+. Portage 7 km along the road
Elvbrua- Snerta, 14 km. Rapids up to grade II+.
Snerta - Sennsjeen        Relatively easy rapid
Sennsjeen- Eidet, 12 km. There are two grade III rapids in the first part, Portage about 5 km.
Eidet - Trysil Relatively easy rapids
I have canoed down the Trysilelva and Klarälven from Trysil.
164 km - 205 km: 2 power stations to portage.
     Trysil - Kolos: Easy
Kolos- Sagnfossen, 4 km: Mainly grade III rapids. I managed to get down these rapids roping down the
canoe in places, but it may be easier to portage along the road. Portage on the left at Sagnfossen power station.
Sagnfossen - Lutnes: There are 2 more significant rapids before Plassen, then on to Lutnes. There is a 1200
m portage past the power station. Then paddle down to the Swedish border at Långflon.
205 - 250 km: One 6 km portage.
Paddle 13 km down the large lake Höljesjön. Here there is a 6 km portage past the power station before
launching your canoe into the outflow canal from the power station. After another 10 km you come to
Strångnsforsen. This is a 1.5 km grade II rapid. You should be able to shoot it after inspecting. (paddle down the
middle then on the left hand side.) 17 km further on there is the final significant rapid at Groaforsen. This has
big waves but you can paddle safely down the middle. Continue down the river to Sysslebäck.
You could start your tour at Sysslebäck canoe centre.
250 - 359 km: No portages
You are now in easy water with no more rapids. This is the section of the river which is popular for canoe
touring or timber-rafting. The river meanders down to Edebäck and is mainly flowing through sandbanks with a
sandy riverbed.
Continue down the Klarälven, passing through the small lake Vingängsjön to reach Brannäs. Brannäs is the
main centre for timber-rafting down the Klarälven. Continue down to Edebäck where there is a canoe centre.
This is where most people end their tour
359 - 478 km: 8 portages, 0.1 - 0.8 km
I haven’t canoed this section of the route.
Easy paddling down a wide calm river, interrupted by 8 portages round power stations. The Klarälven enters
the inland sea Vänern at Karlstad.
