Canoe Guide - Österdalälven/Dalälven
                    Canoe Tours in Dalarna/Gästrikland: Österdalälven/Dalälven

I have not canoed this route and have little detailed information on the route.

Start: Idre: Idre is on Highway 70 in north Dalarna.

Finish: Skutskär

Portages: 12-20 portages, 0.1 - 8.5 km. The number of portages depends mainly on how many rapids you
are prepared to shoot.

Difficulty: Medium. There are some easy rapids and you could be exposed to strong winds on lake Siljan.

Distance: 480 km

Maps: I am not aware of any canoe maps or guides for this route.

The route:
Idre - Trängslet                83 km                No portages
From Idre, paddle down the Österdalälven. Paddling is mainly along long narrow lakes, but there is some
river paddling and a couple of easy rapids which shouldn’t cause any problems. The dam at Trängslet is part of
one of the biggest hydro-electric power stations in Sweden.
    Trängslet - Mora                73 km                5-6 portages, 0.1 - 4.5 km
You start with a 4.5 km portage round the dam at Trängslet and another shorter portage at the big dam at
Åsen. The water between  Åsen and  Älvdalen is fast flowing but doesn‘t have any significant rapids. There are
several smaller dams which will need short portages before you reach Mora
Mora - Leksand                46 km                No portages
You now enter the large lake Siljan and paddle, probably down the southern shore, down to Leksand.
    Leksand - Djurås                35 km                1 portage, 0.2 km
There is one short portage at a dam before you reach Djurås where the Österdalälven and Västerdalälven
join to form the Dalälven.
    Djurås - Avesta                119 km        4-6 portages, 0.1 - 4.0 km
The Upper Dalälven curves its way gently and leisurely down to the town of Avesta. The river is controlled by
dams which must be portaged.
    Avesta - Skutskär                125 km        1-6 Portages, 0.2 - 8.5 km
In this section lakes are separated by sections of river with some rapids. The number of  portages needed
depends on how many of the rapids you decide to shoot, which may depend on the water levels.. You reach the
Baltic Sea at Skutskär.
