Canoe Tours in Dalarna: Vanån
This route follow small rivers, with some easy rapids and small lakes, from Öje to Vansbro.
Start: Öje: Öje is on Highway 45 about 15 km NE of Malung
Finish: Vansbro
Transport: There are bus services linking Öje and Vansbro
Portages: about 5 portages, 0.1-0.8km
Difficulty: Medium
Distance: 70 km
Maps: There are canoe maps and descriptions available for this route.
Route extension: You could paddle the Västerdalälven tour and then connect to the start of this tour with a 6
km portage and a little lake paddling.
Route extension: The Vanån flows into the Västerdalälven at Vansbro so you could continue down the
Västerdalälven as outlined in the Västerdalälven tour description.
The route:
Öje - Johannisholm 32 km 1-2 portages, 0.1 km
Launch by the bridge at Öje and padle through lake Bysjön into the north of lake Öjen. You leave the lake at
Ränna.You then follow a small river with easy rapids and many small lakes and a couple of short portages. You
should inspect the rapids at Ogströmmen before attempting to paddle them. You then enter lake Venjansjön and
paddle north into the main part of the lake. Unless you are visiting Venjan at the north end of this lake, you head
south to Johannisholm.
Johannisholm - Finnbodarna 17 km 2 portages, 0.5-0.8 km
At Johannisholm there is a 500m portage into the small lake Örklingen. You now enter the river Vanån. This
river is easy because most of the rapids have been flooded by dam after 10 km which needs an 800m portage. At
Finnbodarna you enter lake Sjön Van.
Finnbodarna - Vansbro 21 km 1 portage
There are a couple of rapids which you will need to inspect. End the tour at a small marina at Vansbro.
