Canoe Guide - Västerdalälven
Canoe Tours in Dalarna: Västerdalälven
This tour follows the free-flowing waters of the Gjörälven and the Västerdalälven from Ljördal in Norway
down to Malung.
Start: Ljördal in Norway: Ljördal is on a minor road to the east of Trysil in Norway
Finish: Malung
Portages: One 400m portage plus any portages at rapids
Difficulty: Medium
Distance: 130km
Maps: There are route descriptions in English available for this route.
The route:
Gjörälven: Ljördal - Fulunäs 40 km
Launch into the Gjörälven at Ljördal. This section of river can be shallow when the water levels are low. The
river varies from calm to fast flowing with rapids. Most of the rapids are easy, but there are a couple which may
need portaging or roping down, depending on the water level. It is about 20 km to the Swedish border and a
further 40 km to Fulunäs where the Gjörälven joins the Västerdalälven.
Västerdalälven: Fulunäs - Sälen 20 km
This section contains calm water amd easy rapids which shouldn’t pose any problems.
Västerdalälven: Sälen - Malung 70 km
Most of this section is on calm water, but there are a few fairly easy rapids which shouldn’t cause a great
problem. There is one power station after Limedsforsen with a 400m portage.
Route extensions:
You could continue down the Västerdalälven, but the difficulty is considerably higher than the section described
above.
Malung to Äppelbo 40 km
It contains difficult rapids which would need portaging. Portages might not be easy as there the river is
running through wilderness.
Äppelbo to Dalajärna 34 km.
Again there are some short difficult rapids to portage.
DalaJärna - Nås 20 km
Easy with one rapid needing portaging.
Nås - Djurås 51 km
This section contains difficult rapids which will need portaging.
Djurås - Baltic Sea 237 km
At Djurås the Österdalälven and Västerdalälven join to form the Dalälven and this section is described in the
Österdalälven/ Västerdalälven tour.
Route extension:
It would be possible to portage about 6 km along highway 45 and launch into lake Tyngen and then a short
portage will take you lake Öjen into to connect with the Vanån tour.
