Canoe Guide - Jädraån
Canoe Tours in Gästrickland: Jädraån
The Jädraån is a small winding river with some fairly easy rapids.
Start: Kungsfors. Kungsfors is on the minor road joining Järbo and Jädraås to the west of Gävle.
Finish: Sandviken
Portages: 2-6 portages, 0.1 - 3.0 km. There is one 3 km portage. There are a number of rapids on the route
and you will want to portage some of them.
Difficulty: Difficult unless you portage all the rapids.
Distance: 35 km

Route extension: You can continue down the river Gavleån to Gävle as described in the Hoforsleden tour.
The route:
Launch at the bridge over the Jädraån and paddle down the river to Järbo. There are 5 dams in the river as it
goes round the north of Järbo so it is sensible to portage 3 km through Järbo and then paddle down to Jäderfors
Holme. These are difficult rapids with a 4m drop in 600m. The difficulty and best route will vary with the water
level. If you intend to shoot the rapids you will need to inspect them first but I expect most tourers will want to
portage about 1.3 km to the south of the river. Continue downstream to Kvarnströmmen. You will probably be
able to shoot this rapid down the middle, but you should inspect before attempting it and you could portage on
the south side of the river. The short rapid at Högbo is not for the inexperienced and should be portaged on the
north bank. The Högbo River joins from the left and you could paddle up this river a short distance to the
tourist/leisure area at Högbo Bruk. Otherwise continue downstream to the Tyskströmmen. This rapid drops 1m
and is fairly easy, but should be inspected and possibly portaged. The next rapid is easy then you come to the
double rapid at Svibackaströmmen. Again these should be inspected before attempting to shoot or they should be
portaged.
The Jädraån then flows into lake Storsjön.
