Canoe Tours in Jämtland/Medelpad: Hårkan/Indalsälven
I have not canoed this route and have only limited information on the route.
The route follows the rivers Hårkan and Indalsälven. There is a mixture of river and lake paddling.
Start: Aspnäset: Aspnäset is at the head of lake Lenlingen on highway 765 in Norway about 140 km NNW of
Östersund.
Alternative start: Innerdalsån: The river Innerdalsån flows into lake Ulen
Finish: Alnö Sund, just north of Sundsvall.
Transport: There are buses between Valsjöbyn, Föllinge and Östersund
Distance: 357 km
Maps: I am not aware of any canoe maps for this route
Portages: About 20 portages up to 4 km
Difficulty: Medium
The route:
Aspnäset - Valsjöbyn 40 km ? portages
Launch into lake Lenlingen at Aspnäset and paddle down the lake. I do not yet know whether you need to
portage into lake Ulen or whether you can paddle down the river. You cross into Sweden on lake Rengen and
you will have to portage the Rengsfallet waterfall between lakes Rengen and Valsjön.
Valsjöbyn - Föllinge 70 km 2-3 portages 0.1-1.0 km
This section is mainly lake paddling, but there are both passable and impassable rapids on the rivers connecting
the lakes.
Föllinge - Lit 40 km 1 portage 0.4 km
You are paddling down the river Hårkan. You will have relatively easy rapids to shoot and one power station
to portage.
Lit - Hölleforsen 133 km 11 portages, 0.4 - 2.0 km
You are now on the Indalsälven. Initially you are paddling on lakes but after lake Gesunden you are in a
river valley. There are 10 power stations to portage.
Hölleforsen - Alnö Sund 74 km 3 portages, 0.4 - 4.0 km
You start this section with a 4 km portage of the Hölleforsen rapids and then paddle easily down to reach the
Baltic Sea at the Alnö Sund just north of Sundsvall.
