Canoe Tours in Östergötland: Kinda Kanal
The Kinda Kanal, which was completed in 1871, links lake Åsunden to lake Roxen north of Linköping and
is an important link to Göta Kanal. You will cross several beautiful lakes entering the canal. It is not a dug
canal, but the locks were built to deepen the natural course of the river Stångån to enable boats to carry
timber north to the industrial areas of Sweden. Now it is only used by leisure craft. There is a significant flow
on the river at its northern end, but it is still gentle enough to paddle upstream as I have done when I have
paddles this route.
Start: Horn: Horn is on highway 135 at the SW tip of lake Åsunden about 60 km south of Linköping.
Finish: Roxen: There is a sailing club where in Linköping, where the Kinda Kanal flows into lake Roxen.
Portages: 8 portages at the 15 locks, some of them linked. You could choose to pass through the locks
rather than portage.
Distance: 87 km
Difficulty: Easy unless there are winds producing big waves on the lakes.

The route:
From the campsite at Horn paddle into Åsunden and head north into lake Rimforsa and then lake
Järnlunden. This is where you join the canal proper as you pass through the first lock at Brokind. You then
pass through Lilla Rängen and Stora Rängen before passing through 3 sets of locks (7 locks in all) to reach
the last of the lakes, Ärlången. There is a further lock at Slattefors before the lock at Hjulsbro. Instead of
portaging here it is possible to paddle under the bridge on the left. (When paddling upstream a skilled
canoeist could paddle up against the current under the bridge). There is a further set of 3 locks at Tannefors
as you approach Linköping and the Nykvarns lock in Linköping before reaching lake Roxen.
