Canoe Tours in Östergötland: Svartån
The river Svartån flows from lake Sommen to Roxen. The first 7 km aren’t navigable so the tour starts at
Boxholm. There are some awkward portages so I have given detail on the easiest route to take for those
portages.
Start: Boxholm: Boxholm is on highway 32 SW of Linköping
Finish: Roxen: The Svartån flows into Roxen. You could paddle along the south shore of the lake to finish in
Linköping
Portages: 7 portages, 0.1-0.8 km
Distance: 75 km
Difficulty: Medium

Route extension: This tour is part of the Östergötland Round Tour
The route:
It is not obvious where to launch your canoe below Boxholm. The “official” launching site is by the sports
ground NW of Boxholm but I found this overgrown. It is probably easiest to launch on the east bank of the
Svartån by the dam.
Just beyond Ekeby land at a small jetty on the right and cross to the left bank and go down the road to
launch just before the main road junction.
At Mjölby land in the park in the centre of town and launch back into the Svartån at the Mjölby Folk
Museum.. After going under the E4 motorway land on the left at the end of then down rough terrain to the river.
A little further down the river land on the left by a small bathing area and then cross to the right. After
crossing the main river take the first left then the right.
Further downstream you come to a small lake with the Normlösa bathing area. The “official” portage from
the bathing area is difficult. Instead land to the left of the dam and sneak past the power station on the left.
At the next dam lift on the left and cross over and follow the road down until you see a sign “Keramik”.
Follow this road down to the lake.
Take out at the big bathing area at the NE side of the lake. Take the track out of the bathing area, then turn
left and right. At the top of the hill cross fields down to the river.
When you enter lake Roxen head along the southern shore to Linkoping where you could end the tour at the
sailing centre at the mouth of the Kinda Kanal.
