Canoe Tours in Småland/Halland: Nissan
This route follows the Nissan river 190 km from Ryd to reach the sea at Halmstad. This is a small winding
river with dams to portage and rapids to shoot or portage. Much of the route is easy, but some of the rapids will
need inspecting and you may want to portage round some of them.
Start: Ryd. Ryd is on route 26 about 20 km WSW of Jönköping .
Finish: Halmstad on the Kattegut.
Transport: You can get from Halmstad to Ryd by bus or a combination of bus and train.
Distance: 190 km

Portages: about 15 portages from 0.1 - 4.0 km
Difficulty: Medium. There are some rapids on the route.
The route:
a) Ryd - Unnefors 15 km
This section of the river is small and shalow in places and there may be obstacles such as fallen trees, but
the river should be passable. It could be difficult at low water levels. Launch into the Nissan by the bridge over
the river. There is a shallow rocky rapid at Spafors then a 1.5 km portage at Unnefors.
b) Unnefors - Gislaved 55 km
This is a varied section with winding, sometimes shallow, streams, small rapids and some lake paddling. At
low water levels you may to drag the canoe in places. There is a 700m portage at Nissaforsbruk and a 300m
portage at the dam at Gislaved.
c) Gislaved - Skeppshult 35 km
This is an easy section of the river as you paddle on a calm winding waterway. There is just one 100m
portage at the dam at Smålandstenar.
d) Skeppshult - Hyltebruk 35 km
This is another easy section of the Nissan. There are three fairly short portages round dams blocking the
river. There is a 4 km portage at Hyltebruk.
e) Hyltebruk - Halmstad 45 km
This is the most difficult section of the descent with many rapids and portages. There is a 2.5 km portage at
the Glassbo power station and short portages at Rydö and Fröaslida. At the dam at Nissaström there is a 1.8 km
portage and a short portages at the 2 power stations at Oskarström. At the rapid at Sennan it is possible to
paddle down the left hand side and switching to the middle before the bottom. There are a number of short
portages before you reach Halmstad.
