Canoe Guide - Jösse älv
Canoe Tours in Värmland: Jösse älv
This route follows Jösse älv from its source into Norway before heading south to enter Glaskogen north of
Arvika.
Start: Lomstorp: Lomstorp is at the northern tip of Lake Kivilamö north of Mitandersfors.
Alternative start: I started the tour at Mitandersfors which is on the on Arvika on the road heading from
Arvika through Gunnarskog.
Finish: Arvika Canoe Centre, on the Glafsfjorden about 3 km south of Arvika.
Transport: There is a bus service connecting Arvika and Mitandersfors.
Portages: 15 portages, 0.1-2.0 km.
Difficulty: Medium. The paddling is easy but there are many portages.
Distance: 110 km
Maps: There are good canoe maps available for this route.
The route:
From Lomstorp paddle down Kivilamö for a portage into Rolamp and 2 portages with a short paddle to
Klockargården. Paddle north up the Bogsälven to Mitandersfors for a short portage into Veraldsjöen. You
paddle up this lake into Norway and portage into lake Mökern. Follow the south shore of this lake to Fagernes
where there is a short portage and another portage at Austmarka. At Brödböl portage into Utgårdssjön and
paddle down the Jösse älv into small lakes, Flan and then Borgsjön. More river and small lake paddling and a
couple of short portages bring you to Övre and Nedre Vassbotten and into Bergsjön, where there is a short
portage into Näsberget at Gunnarskog. This lake is left along the Vaggeälven from its SW tip to Sättered for
another short portage and into the Bjälvern. Continue down the Vaggeälven with a couple more short portages
to Nysocksjön. Leave this lake at its southern end to enter Glafsfjorden via another portage. From here paddle
on to Arvika.
Route extensions: This could be combined with other routes based on Arvika. I continued from Arvika
down to Säffle.
