This is an easy tour starting in lake of Skjervangen in Norway, the tour follows the sinuous Köla river
through the lakes Hugn and Ränken and down to Arvika. About two-thirds of the route is on lakes.
Start: Skjervangen in Norway. Lake Skjervangen is on highway 21 east of Oslo and close to the Sweden
border.
Finish: Arvika Canoe Centre, on the Glafsfjorden about 3 km south of Arvika.
Portages: 9 portages, 0.1 -1.2 km
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 85 km
Maps: There are good canoe maps available for this route.
The route:
Launch at the northern end of the lake and paddle south down Skjervangen. There is a portage at Krågfoss
at its southern end into Tannsjön, where you cross into Sweden. Portage at the SE corner of Tannsjön into
Askesjön. Paddle down to Skillingsfors for a short portage into Björkelången. Enter the Kölaälven at its
southern end and paddle down to Vadjungen. At the south end of this lake you reenter the Kölaälven to
Koppom and Skönnerud where there are short portages. The Kölaälven twists and turns Adolfsfors where there
is a short portage, after which you soon enter lake Hugn. Paddle down Hugn and at the top of lake Ränken head
east with a short portage into another Askesjön and portage through Åmotsfors into Nysockensjön. Paddle
south down this lake to regain the Kölaälven where you paddle down to Glafsfjorden with one short portage.
Continue down to the Canoe Centre at Arvika.
Alternative finish: You could paddle down lake Ränken and do a 4 km portage into Glafsfjorden and on to
Arvika.
Route extension: This could be combined with other routes based on Arvika.
