Canoe Tours in Värmland: Säffle Kanal
The Säffle Kanal, otherwise known as the Vikingaleden, opens passage from the Dalbosjön area of Lake
Vänern, all the way up to Glafsfjorden and the town of Arvika. Most of the route is on large lakes.
Start: Arvika Canoe Centre, on the Glafsfjorden about 3 km south of Arvika.
Finish: Säffle
Transport: There is a bus or rail service connecting Arvika and Säffle.
Portages: No portages
Difficulty: Easy, unless there are big waves on the lakes.
Distance: 70 km
Maps: There are good canoe maps available for this route.
The route:
From Arvika paddle down Glafsfjorden which seems to be called Söljeflagan and Björnöflagen at its
southern end. Enter the Byälven and paddle down to Gillbergsjön. At the bottom of this lake continue down
the Byälven through Nysäter into Harefjorden and paddle down to Säffle.
Route extension: This could be combined with other routes based on Arvika.
Route extension: The Säffle Kanal continues a few km through a lock at Säffle to lake Vänern.
