Canoe Guide - Värmland Round Tour
Canoe Tours in Västmanland/Värmland: Värmland Round Tour

This is a circular route so you can start anywhere. There are many variations that you can do instead of the
suggested route.

Start and Finish: Valåsens Canoe Centre, Karlskoga. This centre is located close to highway E18 at the eastern
outskirts of Karlskoga.

Portages: about 24 portages from 0.1-4.0 km

Difficulty: Medium. The paddling is easy but there are long portages.

Distance: 270 km

Maps: There are canoe maps and route descriptions available for this route.

The route:
Karlskoga - Alvsjöheden        110 km
From Valåsens Canoe Centre at the start of the Svartälven in Karlskoga, head north up the Svartälven as
described elsewhere in this guide.
Alvsjöheden - Nykroppa        80 km
Take the canoe out at the road bridge at north end of Älvsjön and portage 4 km to Eriksdalsälven, launch into
the stream on its north bank and paddle into the Djurprämmen. There is good camping at the north end of this
lake but you just paddle to Djurprämmen at the SW corner of the lake. Portage 2.5 km to the head of lake
Näsrämmen and launch at the east shore. Paddle to the south end of this lake and there is a short portage into
Lesjön and paddle down to Lesjöfors. Portage through Lesjöfors, launch the canoe into the Fransälven and paddle
into lake Bredreven. Leave Bredreven at its NE corner and make a short portage at Stjärnfors into Mögreven. At
the south end of this lake there is a short portage into Bjursjön. Take your canoe out at Gåsborn for the 4 km
portage to Långban. The guide suggests launching at the road bridge, but this didn’t seem possible to me and I
launched at a small bathing place on the west shore about 1 km south of the bridge. Take out at the southern end
of Långban and portage 2.5 km to lake Yngen. Paddle down to Gammalkroppa. Portage into Ö Skärjen and at the
southern end portage into Herrhultskanalen. When you reach Nykroppa portage 1.5 km into lake Östersjön.
Nykroppa - Karlskoga        75 km
Paddle to the NE corner of Östersjön where the Bergslagskanalen route is joined as you paddle up the
Prästbäcken.
Follow the Bergslagskanalen tour as described elsewhere in this guide.
On the outskirts of Karlskoga before the river drops steeply down into lake Mökeln. Portage about 3km to
relaunch in Mökeln west of the industrial area.
Mökeln        4 km
Paddle along the northern shore of Mökeln and enter the Svartälven where you will quickly reach the Valåsens
canoe centre.

Short cut: From Nikroppa paddle down Östersjön and Mogsjön to Storfors. Portage through Storfors and join
the Bergslagskanalen route in Öjevettern.
