Outdoor Adventures with Ancient Brit
Pyrenees GR11 2003- Day 38: September 16th
                              Tuesday 16th September

The girls left at 8am, but I waited until the sun was up and had a swim before leaving.
The pista down to the border town of Jonquera passed through cork forest. After passing
the girls I picked up some water from a sulphurous spring in Jonquera (a mistake) and
started up the climb to the Puig dels Faluers up a pista and then overgrown path. I lost
the route and missed the spring at Fuente de la Saula, so I would have to make do with
my sulphurous water until I reached Requesens. The terrain was now covered in granite
boulders and outcrops with thick bush and was reminiscent of Southern California. I was
being pestered by flies.
From the Puig dels Faluers there were magnificent, but hazy, views back to the
Pyrenees and forward to the Mediterranean Sea. Requesens was a deserted bar-
restaurante. The only water available was from a fountain with a notice “non potable”.
Since I might not be able to get any more water for 24 hours I had to fill up anyway.
However after another kilometre I found another fountain, possibly with better water
and I stopped to rehydrate. There were views across to the impressive Castillo de
Requesens, which dominated the valley.
There was another stretch of fairly level pista, before the steep 300m climb through
woods to Puig Grosser. I found a camping spot, under the trees, on the ridge and stopped
for my last night.
