PCT 2002 - July 25th
      Day 100: Thursday 25th July
Statue Lake - Saddle above Babs Fork, Kidder Creek

In the morning there was mist in the valleys, which gradually cleared as the sun got
to work, leading to warm humid conditions. I had hoped for an early morning swim at
Payne Lake but it wasn’t suitable, so I made do with a towel bath and washed much of my
clothing at a small creek just after the lake.  I picked up about 5 litres of water and
continued with clothing hanging from my rucksack to dry. I arrived at Etna Summit at
the same time as “Happy Joe” who had spent last night in Etna, resupplied and hitched
back to the Pass. John and Julia were also at Etna, but intended staying another night. I
had left a supply at the summit and spent 15 minutes searching for it. I was getting
worried that animals had got at it, but then there should have been the remains lying
around. Eventually I realised I was looking in the wrong place and found the supply. I
lunched further along the ridge and met a man with 10-12 year-old son and daughter.
They hadn’t a map or any equipment and only a small water bottle each, and were hoping
to get to Shelley Lake, a round trip of 22 miles! After chatting with me they decided to go
up to a small peak and then get better equipped for future trips. When I met them later
on their return they were completely out of water, but the kids were still full of energy.
I saw no-one else before camping on a stony ridge about 4 hours later, with views to
the north down Kidder Creek Canyon.
