PCT 2002 - July 29th
Day 104: Monday 29th July
Devil’s Peaks – SW ridge, Condrey Mountain

There was still a lot of smoke in the valleys in the morning. As the fires tended to
die down overnight, as the wind dropped, the ridges became clearer.
The mornings walk was through steep and rocky terrain, traversing Kangaroo
Mountain and Red Butte. For most of the time I was walking through brush since the
pine trees had not yet recovered from the 1987 fire. As the sun set off convection
currents, the smoke rose out of the valleys causing a very smoky atmosphere. I took
an early lunch at Cook and Green Pass and in the afternoon I was relieved to find
Beardog Spring running, with good water, since the springs I had come across in the
morning were either dry or contaminated by cattle.
A hummingbird was feeding on the nectar from “Paintbrush” about 10ft away from
me, when it was viciously attacked by another hummingbird. They continued to chase
each other around for the next few minutes. When I was about to leave cows arrived at
the spring, so I hope the water was OK for the hikers following me.
I camped in the woods on Condrey Mountain at 8.30pm having seen no-one all day.
