PCT 2002 - Injury Break May 1st
Injury time-out: Wednesday 1st May Deep Creek Hot Springs
The wind had dropped by the time I got up at 8.30 for my first soak of the day. Three
20 year-old girls, Monica, Sandy and Sandra had arrived at The Springs, having left Los
Angeles at 3am after a late-night party. They were naked in the pools not showing the
shyness often shown by young girls. They stayed until late afternoon and the only time
they wore anything was when they needed to cover up to prevent sunburn. They do
waitressing or other casual work, which meant they worked hours often allowing time
them to get away to The Springs.
A man also turned up, accompanied by two large dogs. Many Americans would be lost
without their dogs for protection, which are in addition to the handguns that are also
often carried. Not that the dogs make good guard dogs, because they are mainly overfed
and much more docile than the working dogs found in the European mountains.
“Captain Cheerio” left in late morning but we managed to persuade “Kiwi” to take a
rest day. It looked to us as if he would need several days off, but he wanted to keep
going. “Otter” also had a rest day and showed us how to pan for gold in one of the hot
pools. He managed to separate tiny flakes of gold from the gravel. This is “placer” gold
which is washed down from the hills. These flakes are too small to be worth anything
and you would need to find the “mother lode” if you wanted to make your fortune.
“Cloudwalker”, an experienced walker from Florida, put in a brief appearance at the
springs. He had started from Campo at the end of March with another veteran, “Billy
Goat”. Unfortunately “Billy Goat” had been ill and had been hospitalised for 10 days.
“Cloudwalker” had taken a break but they decided that he would continue on alone and
“Billy Goat” would join up with him later. I would spend a lot of time with them further
up the trail. “Cloudwalker” only took a short break at the springs because his wife, who
was providing support for his walk, was waiting for him at Mojave River Forks
Reservoir Dam.
The temperature only reached about 70ºF today but now that the wind had dropped it
was very pleasant by the hot pools.
