PCT 2002 - May 29th Supply Break
                   Supply Break: Wednesday 29th May

A “Gentleman” turned up at Hill Top at dawn and took exception to us camping or
bivvying near the springs. After using the tub he emptied it! This meant no one else
could use it since, although it fills quickly, the water is then much too hot to get into
for several hours. You don’t like to remonstrate with such people in the USA, because
they are probably carrying guns in their vehicles.
I went on to “The Tub” which was only about a mile away from Hill Top. This hot
spring had equally magnificent views of the High Sierra and several groups had spent
the night here. I had breakfast and a final soak before heading off to the Onion Valley
to complete my supply drops.
There is a 240-mile section of the PCT in the High Sierra, which does not cross a
road. I was going to spend today hiking over the Kearsarge Pass and down to the
Kearsarge Lakes, where I would leave a supply bag in one of the “Bear Boxes” provided
by the National Park Rangers for food storage by backpackers. This was a very hard
day. I was walking through snow that was rapidly softening as it warmed up and I
frequently “pot-holed” (breaking through the crust on the snow and sinking thigh-deep
into the softer snow below)
