Day 131: Sunday 1st September
Gayle’s Brook Camp – W. ridge, Sawtooth Mountain
Someone had arrived after dark and camped by the trail, but he left before I made
a late start at about 7.45am. The trail here was well maintained by the Delson family in
memory of Matt S. Delson. The trail was through uninteresting mature forest until the
afternoon when it passed a few small lakes. It had been bright early in the day, but by
the time I reached Blue Lake it had clouded over and was cool in the strong breeze.
Blue Lake was dotted with tents with backpackers up for the Labour Day Weekend. I
came across a group of youths collecting a vast amount of wood for a campfire. I was
attacked by two of their dogs, but walking poles made good weapons to protect me until
their owners got the dogs under control.
I had a swim in Bear Lake, which was warmer than the air. The cloud cleared a bit
in the evening, but it was too late to get any views of Mount Adams.
