Day 134: Wednesday 4th September
Midway Creek – E. tributary, Cispus River
It was a cloudless night, resulting in a hard frost. I left at 7.25am and passed
“Junco” and Richard still packing up an hour later. I had my second breakfast with
Richard who had gone on ahead of “Junco”. Ed then arrived and reported that “Junco”
was heading down a side trail to look for Richard! Ed, from Olympia in Washington, had
started from Campo on May 2nd, but after a few weeks had got fed up with the desert
and jumped ahead to Tuolumne. On reaching Donner Pass he had jumped ahead to
Santiam Pass in Oregon and now intended to complete the trail to Canada.
I left Richard, still waiting for “Junco” and continued the climb up to the alpine
terrain of the Goats Rocks Wilderness. It was impressive terrain with sparkling tarns,
alpine meadows and open woodland with views of glaciated mountain ridges and distant
volcanoes. “Jarad” went through while I was having a late lunch. He was moving fast to
finish in two week, since he was due back at work on September 27th.
My Achilles tendon had been a little sore for some time and I managed to find snow
patches to give the injury some ice-treatment. The injury was much less serious than in
California and responded well to stretching and ice-treatment when available. “Junco”
and Richard caught up with me in the afternoon and we walked together for the rest of
the day. In the evening we passed another “Devil’s Postpile”, which was much superior
to the tourist attraction at Red’s Meadow near Mammoth Lakes, but out of the reach of
the average tourist. Unfortunately it was already too dark for photographs. We camped
by a tributary of the Cispus River where Ed had already settled in. As the sun was
setting there was a magnificent view down the valley towards Mount St. Helens. It was
already very cold and would test the quality of our sleeping bags tonight.
