PCT 2002 - September 6th
      Day 136: Friday 6th September
Hogback Mountain – Trail 43 junction
It froze hard again overnight. I saw some elk rather too close to the PCT to be safe
from hunters as I made the 2000ft descent down to White Pass.  At the pass I stopped at
the Kracker Barrel Store for breakfast and picked up my supply bag. I chatted for some
time with Derrick who was hiking from the Canadian border to the Columbia River.
“Scooter” then turned up at the store with “Cosue”, from Michigan, with whom he was
now walking. They were going to spend the night at White Pass.
The trail register at the store gave details of some of the hikers who had visited the
store. Of the thru-hikers I had previously met the following were still going: Manfred,
Larry, “Grasshopper”, “Kiwi”, Ben, “Happy Joe”, “Brant”, “Jaybird”, “Mags”, “Mighty
Mouse”, Ivan, Luke, John, Rachel and Scott, Teresa, “Billy Goat”, “Cheddarhead”,
“Bug”, “Flutterby”, “Restless Wind”, “Cupcake”, “Jarad”, “Cantaloupe”, “Scooter” and
“Cosue”. “Fancy” had also been through but she had missed the section from Shelter
Cove to the Columbia River. Others would have passed through when the store was
closed or had not signed the trail register.
I could hear thunder in the distance and black clouds were building up to the east
when I left the store at 1pm. This section of dark viewless forest was made more
interesting by the frequent shallow lakes. Unfortunately there hadn’t been enough
glaciation to produce deep lakes. I had given my Achilles ice-treatment at the store and
again at Buesch Lake where I took a break. I passed a couple hiking south with three
llamas to carry their packs. There was some light rain and hail, but the threatened
deluge hadn’t arrived by the time I camped. I was now in the William O Douglas
Wilderness, name after the late Supreme Court Judge, who was a staunch
conservationist and who hiked this area from his nearby home.
