Day 146: Monday 16th September             Trap Pass – Nason Creek

Drizzle started at about 1am and it was still raining when I left at 7.45am. There
was grey cloud over the mountaintops and mist swirling in the valleys and around the
cliffs. By the afternoon there were heavier showers, but also some dry spells. As I was
descending towards Stevens Pass Ski Centre there was an explosion only 100yards
below the trail. The Ski Centre was bulldozing a new piste and blowing up boulders that
could be dangerous to the skiers. These bulldozed pistes turn ski resorts into a real
eyesore in the summer.
I picked up the supply cache I had left in the trees by the pass. While I was
repacking  “Scooter” and “Cosue” came through, having just hitched up from
Skykomish where they had spent last night. They told me that rain was forecast for at
least another three days. I also met a Russian leaving the trail having hiked south
from Rainy pass to Stevens Pass. I was surprised to learn that he lived in Seattle where
there was a Russian community of about 100,000. There were also a couple of young
lads hiking south from the Canadian border to the Columbia River.
It was still raining when I settled down for the night by the marshy Nason Creek
