Outdoor Adventures with Ancient Brit
PCT 2002 - September 22nd
Day 152: Sunday 22nd December Image Lake – above Agnes Creek
I awoke to a clear cold morning and, while having breakfast in bed, I looked out of
the tent at Glacier Peak as the stars faded away and the first rays of light from the sun
hit the snow-covered slopes of the Peak. This is always a magical time in the high
mountains. There were Clark’s Nutcrackers hopping around the tents optimistically
hoping for a meal.
There was a two-hour high-level traverse to Suiattle Pass, where I rejoined the
PCT, followed by the 4,500ft drop down Agnes Creek Canyon to the Stehekin River.
The trail down, through mature forest was within sound, but rarely sight of the Agnes
Creek. It was notable for the massive Western Red Cedar Trees with diameters up to
10ft.
It was 6pm by the time I camped on a rocky knoll (Roches Moutonnées) high
above Agnes Creek. I had seen no-one all day apart from one hiker at a distance who
looked rather like “Goof”. It is rather like “the tortoise and the hare” the way the
same fit fast youngsters keep overtaking me.
