Day 155: Wednesday 25th September
Snowy Lakes – S. of Tatie Peak

The alpine traverse continued for a couple of hours, then I dropped down into dark
cold forest. By the time I reached the floor of Brush Creek Canyon the forest had
largely replaced by brush, as the steep craggy walls of the canyon were prone to
avalanche, which stopped trees getting a hold. I took an early lunch at Brush Creek, as
it was likely to be a long way to the next water. On the climb out of the canyon I passed
two Mexican trail workers cutting down the brush that was encroaching on the trail. I
was surprised to see them working with blunt-looking machetes, rather than using
powered hedge trimmers. There were a lot of Grey Squirrels in these woods, and I also
saw Spruce Grouse and the Northern Harrier.
I camped in a corrie with a spring below Tatie Peak. Being east-facing it was out of the
sun by the time I arrived at 4.45pm and already the temperature was dropping rapidly.
An hour later Peter and Keith turned up. Peter, from Florida, was holidaying with Keith,
from nearby Bellingham, and Keith wanted to show him the mountains before he
returned home There was smoke to the north, which looked as if it might be close to the
PCT, but Keith told me that although the fire was covering 10,000 acres and was out of
control it was well to the east of the trail.
