PCT 2002 - September 27th
Day 157: Friday 27th September Holman Pass – Castle Creek
I intended to camp in Canada tonight! It was about 18 miles to the border and the
end of the PCT. This wouldn’t be the end of the walk, since it would still be 8 miles to
reach the nearest highway at Manning Park in Canada. The morning saw a continuation
of the fine alpine ridges, but unfortunately the scenery wasn’t matched by the weather,
with low cloud and rain. It began to clear up in the afternoon as I started the drop down
to the border.
I had seen no-one all day by the time I arrived at the border at 5pm. The border
was marked by a felled strip about 10 yards wide. A bit different from the security fence
I started at a long 2,700 miles away. There was a monument commemorating the treaty
of 1848, which established the border and a monument marking the northern terminus
of the Pacific Crest Trail. After taking a few photos I continued down to Castle Creek
since there was nowhere to camp at the border.
