Round Britain 2004
I set out from home in April 2004 with the intention of walking Round Britain
joining up the four corners of Britain. Three of those points were obvious, Lands End,
Cape Wrath and Duncansby Head (John o'Groats). The SE corner of Britain is less well
defined and I decided on Beachy Head, mainly because My Father lived at Seaford
within a few miles and because I thought it would give me time to complete the walk in
one summer, which wouldn't be possible if I hiked all round the Kent coast,
I planned to walk along footpaths as much as possible. In England this wasn’t a
problem where there is a network of Long Distance Paths that could be joined up with
local paths and a minimum of roadwalking. In places local paths weren’t passable and I
had to resort to a limited amount of roadwalking. In the Midlands I was intending to
walk mainly along canal towpaths. In Scotland there isn’t the same network of paths
as in England In the mountains this isn’t a problem since there is generally free access
to the hills and sufficient paths, often very rough to follow, however in the lowlands
and along the north coast I would have to do a fair amount of roadwalking.
I was used to walking in mountains and not on the lowlands. I this is probably the
reason for greater number of foot injuries and blisters I suffered on this trip compared
with my mountaineering trips. Walking on flat hard surfaces at a reasonable speed is
hard on the feet but easier on the knees than mountain walking.
I have full journal entries for the route which are accessed from the monthly links
on the left together with a large selection of photos.
I have included a few naturist photos, but the cold, wet weather through the
summer of 2004 precluded many naturist opportunities. If you are going to be offended
by such photos please leave the site.
There is a sketch map of the route, in the form of a bodypainting on the index page
for each month.
I have also given the outline schedule and detailed daily schedule. These can be
accessed from the schedule link.
